GW was pushing renegade chaos at that time; look in the 5th edition codex (vomit) and there's barely mention of the legions. Also, red and gold probably contrasted better with green white black and silver that the dark angels had. It was most likely a studio paint decision based on the other contents of the starter, the rulebook art, and the focus on renegades as opposed to legions.

The Dark Vengeance starter box Dark Angels army list using the 6th Edition Codex Dark Angels. Many of the Chaos models are Cultist infantry with 6+ armour saves, while only seven are wearing power armour with only the Helbrute having an AV value. All perfectly suited to being splattered by the DAs plasma weapons, bolters, power weapons.

The weapon load outs heavily favor the DA also as the chaos has very few answers to Terminator armor. Cultists have potential but not when fielded as squads of 10. *The chosen are a mess (more on this later). *Hellbrute kind of sucks as is( more later). *Chaos lord sucks with the straight out of the box load out. *Overall the Dark Angels are solid.
